Practice Policies That Protect You

Most complaints and client disputes start in a gray area your policies never addressed. I help Louisiana therapists put clear, written policies in place before a problem starts.

Your forms tell clients their rights. Your policies tell everyone, including you, how your practice actually runs. When something goes wrong, like a parent demanding records, a client upset that therapy ended, or a text message that gets misread, a clear written policy that you've followed consistently is one of the best protections you have.

I see the other side of this in my board defense work. Many complaints against therapists grow out of situations a good policy would have handled: unclear boundaries, confusion over who could access a child's records, or treatment that ended without a clear plan.

Policies every practice should have

  • Communication and social media: how and when clients can reach you, texting and email, and why you don't connect with clients online
  • Custody and family-court cases: what role you will and won't play, and your fees for court time
  • Minors and parental access: who can consent to treatment and who can see records
  • Ending treatment: how therapy ends, referrals, and what happens when a client stops showing up
  • Cancellations, fees, and collections
  • After-hours contact and crisis situations
  • Telehealth: verifying where your client is and planning for emergencies
  • Online reviews: how to respond without confirming someone is your client
  • Records retention and release
  • Supervision, for practices with provisional licensees
  • Staff confidentiality and training, for group practices

Policies only work if you follow them

A policy that sits in a binder doesn't protect you. I help you write policies that fit how you actually practice, share them with clients through your intake documents, and apply them consistently. Consistency is what a licensing board or a court looks for.

For group practice owners

If you employ other clinicians or staff, your policies also protect your business. I help practice owners build policies for onboarding, training, confidentiality, and supervision, so everyone in your practice is working from the same playbook.

Why therapists work with me

I've practiced healthcare and business law for more than 17 years, and I work with therapists at every stage: starting practices, writing policies, and defending them before their boards. That board defense work shows me exactly which gaps in a practice's policies lead to complaints, so I can help you close them first.

My own background is in psychology, with a special interest in applied neuroscience, so I understand your world and share your goals: caring for your clients and protecting the practice you've built.

No retainer. Payment plans that fit your budget.

I don't ask for retainers. I bill only for work I've completed, and you can set up a payment plan that fits your needs.

Put your policies to work for you.

Let's build policies that fit your practice and hold up when you need them. Consultations are available by phone, video, or in person across Louisiana.
